Case Study: National Military Family Association
Turning Social Listening Into Advocacy
A digital engagement campaign that opened a conversation about food insecurity, connected military families with resources, and generated firsthand insights that supported national advocacy.
The Challenge
NMFA's policy and research teams were working to better understand food insecurity among military families. Although many families qualified for programs such as WIC and SNAP, stigma and a lack of accessible information could make conversations about using those resources difficult.
We needed a digital strategy that could do more than raise awareness. It needed to create a space where military families felt comfortable asking questions and sharing their experiences directly with us.
The Insight
Through social listening, I recognized that WIC was a more approachable entry point for our audience than SNAP. Rather than beginning with a broad public awareness campaign, I recommended using direct messaging to lower the barrier to participation and make the conversation feel personal.
The goal was to position NMFA not simply as an organization broadcasting information, but as a team of people ready to listen, answer questions, and connect military families with useful resources.
What I Did
- Worked across policy, research, and communications teams to develop accurate responses and identify useful WIC resources.
- Developed the campaign strategy based on social listening and audience behavior.
- Created social media and email messaging inviting military families to share their experiences with WIC or send us their questions.
- Used direct messaging as a relationship-building tool, allowing NMFA to engage families in a more private and approachable environment.
- Helped surface recurring questions, experiences, and themes that could be shared with NMFA's research and policy teams.
The Impact
The campaign generated more than 100 direct messages related to WIC, an especially meaningful result because NMFA had not previously used a direct-message campaign in this way.
The value extended beyond engagement metrics. The conversations provided NMFA's research team with firsthand insights that could inform continued research, while the policy team gained real stories and experiences they could draw from when advocating for military families on Capitol Hill.
